Scholar Success Story: Sofija Nastoska - Leadership, Empathy, and Commitment to a Better School Community

Through the Support Fund for Talented High School Students “Talents Today - Leaders Tomorrow,” Macedonia2025 supports young people who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a strong commitment to making a positive difference in their communities.

One of these inspiring scholars is Sofija Nastoska, a fourth-year student at the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Gymnasium SOUG “Mirche Acev” in Prilep. Throughout her high school education, Sofija has combined outstanding academic performance with active leadership and volunteerism. As a long-time class president and the current Student Ombudsperson, she has become a voice for her peers, working to create a more inclusive, supportive, and respectful school environment.

Alongside her leadership activities, Sofija has earned numerous regional and national awards in geography, music, and the German language, proving that academic excellence and social responsibility can go hand in hand.

Academic Excellence with a Broad Range of Interests

Sofija has always believed that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Throughout her education she has successfully balanced her academic responsibilities with competitions, leadership roles, and extracurricular activities.

Her achievements include multiple awards in geography, music, and German language, where she has represented her school with distinction at regional and national competitions. Maintaining excellent grades while actively participating in numerous initiatives demonstrates her discipline, curiosity, and commitment to lifelong learning.

Leading by Listening: A Student Ombudsperson in Action

The 2025/2026 academic year was marked by Sofija's exceptional engagement as Student Ombudsperson. Rather than seeing the role as a title, she viewed it as an opportunity to improve everyday school life for her fellow students.

She designed and organized the workshop "From Student to Student," introducing first-year students to the role of the student ombudsperson and helping them understand both their rights and responsibilities within the educational process. Through interactive presentations, games, discussions, and creative activities, she encouraged students to express their opinions and actively participate in creating a positive school atmosphere.

Her central message throughout these activities was simple: “A school becomes stronger when every student feels heard, respected, and included.”

Giving Young People a Voice

To celebrate World Children's Day, Sofija coordinated an entire week of activities dedicated to children's rights and youth participation.

Among the initiatives she organized were the classroom activity "Write What You Think," where every student wrote messages, wishes, and ideas about children's rights, as well as public interviews with citizens discussing childhood, children's rights, and young people's role in society.

She concluded the week by leading the workshop "What Kind of World Are We Building? Children's Day from the Perspective of Young People." Working in teams, students analyzed real-life school situations, identified violations of children's rights, discussed possible solutions, and reflected on how respect and empathy can improve everyday relationships.

These activities encouraged students not only to learn about their rights, but also to recognize their responsibility in creating a positive school community.

Humanity Through Action

For Sofija, leadership also means caring for others.

To mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, she organized a humanitarian campaign involving the entire school community. Together with the Student Parliament, teachers, and the local day center "Dzunica," students collected donations, prepared symbolic gifts, and spent time with children and adults attending the center.

The initiative carried the message: "Together We Are Stronger."

She also participated in the traditional humanitarian Christmas event organized by the Children's Embassy in Prilep, where gifts were prepared for children from foster families under the motto "One Sky for All Children." For Sofija, these moments were among the most meaningful experiences of the year, reinforcing her belief that even small gestures of kindness can make a lasting difference.

Building Bridges Through Dialogue

Believing that communication is one of the most important life skills, Sofija organized several workshops focused on peaceful conflict resolution and mutual understanding.

On International Anti-Corruption Day, she coordinated an educational workshop introducing students to the concept of corruption, its impact on society, and the importance of integrity and civic responsibility.

Later in the year, she developed and delivered the workshop "When Words Build Bridges," where students explored different communication styles, practiced conflict resolution, and learned techniques such as using "I-messages" to express their thoughts respectfully. Through practical scenarios from everyday school life, students discovered that disagreements can become opportunities for understanding rather than conflict.

Creating Opportunities for Others

One of Sofija's proudest accomplishments during the year was organizing a school humanitarian party together with the Student Council

The goal was to raise enough funds so that every third-year student, regardless of financial circumstances, could participate in the school's optional educational excursion.

The initiative successfully achieved its objective, ensuring equal opportunities for all students to share an important educational experience with their classmates.

For Sofija, this project perfectly illustrated the power of teamwork, solidarity, and student initiative.

Sofija on the “Talents Today - Leaders Tomorrow” Program

Reflecting on her experience, Sofija shared: "Receiving this scholarship was a great honor and a strong motivation for me to continue learning and improving myself. Beyond the financial support, it gave me the feeling than my hard work and achievements were recognized and appreciated. This experience encouraged me to set even higher goals and believe in my own abilities. I am grateful for the trust and the opportunity to be part of this program. I believe initiatives like this are incredibly important for the development of young people, and this recognition motivates me to continue investing in myself and striving for new achievements."

Looking Toward the Future

Looking ahead, Sofija hopes to continue combining academic excellence with leadership and community engagement. Her experiences as a student ombudsperson, volunteer, humanitarian organizer, and student leader have shown her that meaningful change begins with empathy, responsibility, and the willingness to act.

Whether through education, civic engagement, or future professional opportunities, she is determined to continue using her knowledge and leadership skills to improve the lives of others.

With her compassion, determination, and commitment to serving her community, Sofija embodies the values of the "Talents Today - Leaders Tomorrow" program.

Sofija's story reminds us that true leadership is not measured by titles or awards, but by the positive difference we make in the lives of others.
