Ljupka Milenkovikj - Promotional Campaign “Science for the Future”

Every Great Discovery Begins with a Simple “Why?”

As part of the Science for the Future promotional campaign, implemented with the support of the Johnson Matthey Community Impact Programme, we are pleased to share the inspiring story of Ljupka Milenkovikj, a Teacher Mentor and Geography Teacher at "Vojdan Chernodrinski" Primary School in Skopje.

As an educator, Ljupka believes that science begins with curiosity and the courage to ask questions. Every day, she encourages her students to explore the world around them, think critically, and recognize science as a pathway to a better future.

Her message to young learners is both inspiring and empowering: “Dear students, science begins with one simple question: ‘Why?’ and continues with the courage to seek the answer. It helps you understand the world, nature, people, and the changes taking place around us. Through science, you discover new opportunities, develop critical thinking, and create solutions that can make life better. Trust your curiosity, explore, ask questions, and never be afraid to dream big. Perhaps among you are the future scientists, geographers, doctors, engineers, researchers, environmentalists, tourism professionals, and innovators who will shape the future.”

In her personal story, Ljupka shares how her passion for geography led her to a career dedicated to education: “My success story began with my love for geography - a science that connects nature, people, and the space in which we live. That passion inspired me to choose a profession through which I now have the opportunity to pass on my curiosity for science to younger generations. Geography is both a natural and a social science because it helps us understand natural phenomena, climate, water resources, landforms, and the environment, as well as populations, settlements, cultures, economies, and the ways people shape the world around them.

As a geography teacher, I strive every day to show my students that science is not confined to textbooks - it is present everywhere around us. It teaches us to observe, explore, ask questions, think critically, and seek solutions to the challenges of the modern world.

My greatest achievement is seeing curiosity awaken in my students and watching their desire to discover grow. That curiosity can become the first step toward choosing a science-related education and career. This is why I encourage my students to embrace science, keep exploring, and believe in themselves. Perhaps they will become the future geographers, researchers, environmentalists, tourism experts, urban planners, engineers, doctors, or scientists who will help create a better future.”

Ljupka Milenkovikj is part of a community of dedicated educators who, through the Science for the Future campaign, inspire young people to discover science as a pathway to knowledge, critical thinking, innovation, and a brighter future.
