As part of the Science for the Future promotional campaign, implemented with the support of the Johnson Matthey Community Impact Programme, we are pleased to share the inspiring story of Janinka Gorgieva Kostadinoska, a Natural Sciences Teacher at “St. Clement of Ohrid” Primary School in Makedonski Brod.

As an educator, Janinka believes that the most effective learning takes place through personal experience, exploration, and direct contact with nature. For her, science is not merely knowledge acquired from textbooks, but a way of thinking and acting responsibly toward the world around us.

Her message to students is simple yet powerful:

“Let us preserve our planet for the day when today becomes the past!”

In her personal story, Janinka highlights the importance of practical learning and developing students’ critical-thinking skills:

“Nature is the best classroom, and the best way to learn is through direct experience in the field. When students are actively involved in research and placed in situations where they must draw their own conclusions and form opinions based on evidence, they learn far more than they could from any textbook.

This approach helps them become responsible, conscientious, and independent individuals with well-developed critical-thinking skills. These young people will become the drivers of positive change and will have a lasting impact on their communities, society, and the environment.

That is why I encourage students always to observe nature, ask questions, explore, and think for themselves. Science is not only a way to understand the world—it is also an opportunity to preserve and improve it for future generations.”
