Last night, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Macedonia, the CN Tower and Niagara Falls were lit up with the colors of the Macedonian flag.
“It is most appropriate when Niagara Falls, recognized as the seventh wonder of the world, recognized the 30th anniversary of the Macedonia’s independence. The power, beauty and strength of the waterfalls are a symbol of the efforts of my father John Bitove Sr., and other actions, which undertook to choose the global recognition and independence of the country in peace,” said Jordan Bitove. “My dad and all Macedonians longed for a day that they could have a place that they could actually call Macedonia,” Bitove said. “So, for me, there’s a lot of emotion around the date.”
Canadian businessman of Macedonian descent John Bitove Sr., one of the founders of “Macedonia2025” who died in 2015, is a prominent descendant of Macedonian immigrants in North America who made key efforts in the independence movement of the Republic of Macedonia in the late 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s, and gained recognition of Macedonia in Canada.
On September 8, exactly thirty years ago, more than 140 countries around the world recognized the name Republic of Macedonia in an international recognition efforts led by John Bitove Sr.
Definitely, John Bitove Sr. was a pillar of the global Macedonian community and a champion for Macedonian human rights. We should forever be grateful for the efforts towards recognition of the country that he made. Let’s continue his legacy and keep on building a stronger nation!
