MACEDONIA OFFICIALLY JOINS NATO
Macedonia has officially become NATO’s 30th member, the military alliance says. Macedonia became NATO’s newest member with the presentation of its “instrument of accession” to the U.S. State Department in Washington D.C., NATO said in a statement from its headquarters in Brussels.

AFTER YEARS OF DELAY, MACEDONIA AND ALBANIA BEGIN EU ACCESSION TALKS
European Union ministers say they have approved beginning membership talks with Macedonia and Albania, with a top German official calling it “good news in these gloomy times.” “Congrats to Tirana+Skopje, it’s well deserved,” Michael Roth, Germany’s state secretary for European affairs, wrote on Twitter on March 24, after the agreement was reached during a videoconference.

MACEDONIA’S BUSINESSES FEAR PANDEMIC’S ECONOMIC SHOCKWAVES
Apart from forcing people to stay at home, the coronavirus is changing the way people in Macedonia think about earning and spending their money. Due to restrictive measures that have been imposed, many people are already working from home, use taxis much less often than usual, not going out for a coffee or attending concerts, theatre performances or cinema screenings, and not travelling abroad.

POLICY CONTRIBUTION 1/2020: COVID-19 ANTI-CRISIS MEASURES – WEEKLY UPDATE
It all began as a health crisis, far from Europe and Macedonia, but Covid-19 quickly lead to a global economic crisis. Stock markets crashed, oil prices dropped sharply, production stopped, factories and shops began to close, and workers were sent on forced leave. The crisis has just begun and companies are already making losses, facing great uncertainty about the future.

POLICY CONTRIBUTION 2/2020: COVID-19 ANTI-CRISIS MEASURES – WEEKLY UPDATE
Unfortunately, despite the robust discussions over the past week, among the expert public, the media and the state institutions, for the need of introducing new measures, this has not happened yet. New borrowing by the state (of up to EUR 600 million) and EU assistance of approximately 70 EUR million were announced.
